Yesterday I flew on an overnight flight to Frankfurt and then to Zurich. Both airports were absolutely massive— literally it took me about 30 minutes to walk from the terminal I landed in to the terminal of my next flight/train. Zurich was a bit confusing because I had to purchase a train ticket for the right train and then find that train (lol).
The ticket was way more than I thought it would be, I was expecting around 25CHF, but it was 75CHF. I took a small amount of money with me that I ordered at my bank; I was able to pay in cash so that was helpful to not incur a fee already. The people in the airport were super helpful in directing me to the right platform! It's so what similar to the way the subway works in NY (super thankful I lived there last summer or else I don't think I would have understood this system).
The path from ZRH to Mendrisio requires three trains. The first from the airport to Zurich HB (Zurich's main station) and then from Zurich HB to Lugano (approximately two hours), then Lugano to Mendrisio. At this point I had two suitcases and a backpack.
I would give anything to have a photo of the next part... I don't know the metric system and google maps directed me to walk 12 minutes from the train station to the Casa.. why did I not get an Uber... seriously. I made it almost the the end on flat ground and thought, "this isn't bad at all," but then there was a giant hill. It took me probably 12 minutes to literally push my suitcases up the hill alone! By the time I got to the top I was pouring sweat! Thankfully the Casa was only a minute walk from the top and it was beautiful!
I arrived with 15 minutes left to spare in the check in time! Woo! A few students showed me to my room on the second floor, where the laundry was, etc. My room is so beautiful. Seriously, any photo I had ever seen did not do this place justice. At this point all I wanted to do was change clothes, shower, and go to sleep! I felt a sense of relief of getting here and immediately felt safe here.
This room is seriously so cool! There's a window the size of my car that opens completely WITH NO SCREEN!!! There's a motorized curtain that opens with the push of a button, exposed concrete on the floor, walls, and ceiling, a wooden desk with shelving, a drawer under the bed, and really cool lights! I share a bathroom with one other girl named Alex who is from Belgium. We share a kitchen and living room with two boys, one from VT and one from Belgium as well! I will post photos of out common area soon; it's a little stormy today.
This morning I woke up starving and thirsty! I realized I hadn't eaten since the free meal on the first plane and hadn't had anything to drink since that plane either. I got ready and walked down to the market called Migros just down the road. It was a super quick and easy walk. There I found so many cool things, not to mention my favorite cheese!
I got a few items such as fruits, croissants, mango juice (omg), and a small cactus to make my room a little more homey. It was a good thing I brought my bigger purse because they don't provide bags! I stuffed what I could in my purse and then just carried the rest back.
I gulped down my water and shared breakfast with my roommate in our kitchen. She is fluent in French and speaks some English, maybe I will work on two languages this year. Anyone who knows me knows I have a love for plants, look how cute this little cactus is! It's been about 65 degrees here so I've left me window open most of the time.
