One year ago I literally had no clue what a podcast was. So if you have no clue what I'm talking about, you're not alone fam. Fast forward to March 2018 and I listen to at least one podcast per day. I'm a multi-tasker at heart so it's no surprise that my favorite time to listen to them is while I'm at the gym doing cardio-- mindlessly speed walking or cycling my way to no where. (Of course, like most people I like to listen to music while doing things that take more concentration like lifting or doing machines) If you're like me, you get bored entirely too easily and there's nothing more boring that sitting on a stationary bike for 45 minutes. I need someone to talk to. Well, really, I need someone to talk to me while I respond in my head because let's be real, I'm too out of breath to have a full conversation. That's where podcasts come in! Some of my favorite ones are literal conversations between two women and I just get to sit there, listen, and be filled with knowledge. I LOVE it!
I had a bit of a rocky start with podcasts. One of my friends was stunned when I told her I didn't listen to podcasts, so I went home and downloaded to app and then searched for "bible." HA! No wonder I didn't find anything! Podcasts are kind of like social media, it's all in who you're following, but the difference is that you can't just take two seconds to scroll down their feed and see if you like their aesthetic. You actually have to spend a coulple hours listening to their podcasts to know if you like them or get recommendations from friends! Luckily, I've listened to quite a few by now and decided to compile a list that will save you valuable time and boredom.
So here ya go, 5 Life-Changing Podcasts You Need to Listen To:
I listened to this one this week at the gym after being recommended by a friend, Libby Perritt @faithfullyfitarmy, and wound up yelling "PREACH" in the gym! Haha! People, this one is a must! It's 45 minutes of truth + power. So many lies of the enemy were ripped right out of me listening to this and I can't wait to listen to more by Steven Furtick. Key point: the enemy likes to keep us comfortable in our sin. God will sometimes push us out of comfort and into discomfort for our own good.
This was the first episode I listened to by Johnathan David & Melissa Helser and it will probably forever be my favorite. There's so much truth in these 30 minutes. This podcast is a combination of the two Helsers speaking. Some of them will be Melissa speaking and others with be Jonathan. In this particular episode, Melissa shares all about her own experiences in getting to know the Father. One of my favorite things she says is in reference to her all too young friend loosing their fight with cancer, leaving behind a spouse and a new baby. She describes her prayer as asking God “why why why” would He do this knowing what they are leaving behind... asking Him “but what about [the spouse]!!!!” God simply replied to her, “Melissa, talk to me like the person you know me to be.” I love this. So much. Sometimes I think we start to “yell” at God, insinuating that He isn’t good or forgot to be good. We are forgetting all the while that God’s entire being is good and He is completely aware of all that is happening and that He didn’t “forget” about the spouse or the baby. Anyway, there is so much more to this episode, but that’s my favorite part.
I found this podcast through Stephanie's Instagram! I've followed her for months and when she started making podcasts, I knew I HAD to check them out! What I love about these podcasts is that they're conversations about things that almost every girl out there goes through, but may not have an "expert" to get advice from. Stephanie hosts each episode with someone who is an "expert" (or closer than I am!) on each topic. Seriously, it really feels like a much more wise version of pillow talk at a sleepover! <3 If you're in your twenties, this one is for you!
Could it honestly get any better? Oprah + Brené? These are two of the most influential women in the world and somehow we are blessed enough to get to hear a conversation between them about Brené's book FOR FREE?! "When we lose our tolerance for vulnerability, joy becomes foreboding." This isn't an explicitly christian podcast, but you won't find anything in here that goes against faith. This will only help you grow your relationship with God and those around you. Faith – (vulnerability + mystery)
No joke people, I had to leave the gym because I was SOBBING listening to this. Jonathan shares what it actually means when God gives us a "new name." If you've ever struggled with identity, self-worth or self-confidence, you need to listen to this. And if you haven't struggled with any of those, you still need to listen. This is the gospel.
BOOM. You have 5 super encouraging podcasts to listen to. I challenge you to listen to one of these each day for the next five days. I promise you’ll end with stronger and more passionate faith and more encouraged that you thought was possible without buying a study series. The best part... they are F R E E! I don’t know about you, but I pay enough for my Apple products, it’s about time they give me something free in return!
